From the North (M6 and A6) and East (A66 and A685)

Approach Kendal by the A6 or the road from Tebay (A685).

Drive into Kendal and follow the signs to Windermere which bring you out of Kendal on the A591. Try not to miss the Windermere signs because if you do, you will have to follow the tortuous one-way system around Kendal.

From the A591 north of Kendal

Depending on your mobile supplier, this is probably the last place your mobile will work, though Orange works a little way up Kentmere valley.

After the roundabout, drive for about a mile passing a BP garage and the ‘Great Outdoors' shop on the right. About 100 yds further there is a signpost to Staveley and Kentmere (there is a level crossing sign on the signpost). Take this right turn.

Drive through the centre of Staveley and where the road bears round to the left, take the right hand turn signposted to Kentmere. This is narrow, usually with cars parked and then it opens out a bit and then narrows again. Follow the road, keeping the river on your right until the road takes a sharp right turn over a bridge (signposted to Kentmere), followed by a sharp left turn. Drive for about 4 miles up the narrow (with passing places) and twisty road. As you approach Kentmere village you will see the church up on the hill to the left. There is a fork in the road with the right-hand one signposted to Green Quarter and the left-hand one sign-posted to Kentmere Church . Take the left-hand fork to Kentmere Church . In the village, after the bridge follow the road round to the left and *immediately* before the church turn sharp right up a steep and narrow lane (a 1 st gear turn as it is steep with an adverse camber). Follow the lane, then drive through a farm yard (1 st gear again) and then about 100 yds further on, up a steep and stony track you will find Brow Head on the left.

From the South (M6)

From the M6, take the A590 at junction 36. This then joins with the A591. Follow the signs to Windermere until you are north of Kendal (big roundabout with a sign to Plumgarth's Farm Shop).

From the A591 north of Kendal see above

From the North via Ambleside, Windermere & Ings

Follow the A591 southwards until you pass through Ings. Shortly afterwards, you will see the sign for Staveley on the left-hand side.

Depending on your mobile supplier, this is probably the last place your mobile will work, though Orange works for a little way up Kentmere valley.

Take this left turn and drive to the centre of Staveley and where the road bears round to the right, take the left hand turn signposted to Kentmere. This is narrow, usually with cars parked and then it opens out a bit and then narrows again.
